Students were given toothpicks and marshmallows for their construction and a list of requirements. The Union Pacific team would need to cross the Great Plains while being struck by arrows (paper balls) from Indian attacks. Students hit would sit in the penalty box for 5 minutes before they could commence construction. Once through the Plains they would need to curve their track through the rocky mountains (textbooks) to make it to Promontory, Utah. The Central Pacific team had a different struggle. They had to tunnel through the mighty, Sierra Nevada Mountains, using only toothpick and while wearing winter coats and gloves!!
